An institution of the Rogers Park neighborhood, Flatts and Sharpe continues a 30-year tradition of catering to the specialized needs of a diverse community of musicians, both professional and beginner, with the store's new owner, Chris Bell. Faithful regulars will notice a few new faces, but the enthusiastic new additions to the store carry on a tradition of friendly and dedicated customer service began by founder Ed Mooney.
Through the years, Ed cultivated one of the best selections of music books in the city, basing the stock on the needs and requests of individual customers, and browsing through the collection is, in itself, an education in world music. Anything we don't have, we will happily order – free of charge. We also offer everything from guitars for beginners to pedal steels, bongos, mandolins, tambourines, amps, drums, and more. Again, just ask one of the staff if there's something we can find for you. Our professional, experienced team of teachers offer quality, affordable in-store lessons. Currently, we teach piano, fiddle, banjo, mandolin, bass guitar, drums, cello, and all levels and styles of guitar.

We remain dedicated to and passionate about Ed's vision for the store. In that tradition, we plan to further adapt to the needs of the community that we serve beginning with later hours to accommodate musicians with day jobs, group lessons, a selection of local musicians' CDs – and discovering new ways to support the musicianship of each and every one who walks through the door. A Rogers Park native herself, Chris knows well the unique and exciting opportunities and challenges that come with living in one of the most culturally – and musically – diverse neighborhoods in the country.
